Sound healing has roots in ancient cultures and traditions around the world. Its origins span millennia, and various civilizations have used sound and vibration as tools for healing, meditation, and spiritual practices. Here are some notable sources:
The Egyptians believed sound could restore harmony and balance in the body. They used vocal chants, instruments like the sistrum (a type of rattle), and specific tones in their healing rituals.
In India, sound healing is deeply rooted in the Vedic tradition. The chanting of mantras like "Om" is thought to align the body and mind with the universe's vibrations. Instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls and tanpura are also integral to these practices.
Tibetan monks developed the use of singing bowls and chanting for meditation and healing. These sounds are believed to balance chakras and harmonize the body's energy.
Indigenous tribes in the Americas used drumming, flutes, and vocal toning in ceremonies. These sounds were believed to connect individuals to nature, spirits, and their inner selves.
The Greeks viewed music and sound as powerful tools for healing and therapy. Pythagoras, the philosopher and mathematician, studied the healing effects of harmonic frequencies and referred to it as "musical medicine."
Indigenous Australian cultures have used the didgeridoo for over 40,000 years in healing ceremonies. The instrument's vibrations are believed to aid physical and emotional well-being.
In the 20th century, sound healing was revived in Western practices, with researchers exploring the therapeutic effects of frequencies, binaural beats, and instruments like crystal bowls and tuning forks.
Sound healing today integrates these ancient practices with modern understandings of sound frequencies and their effects on the human body, promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and energetic balance.
Sound healing works by using specific sound frequencies, vibrations, and rhythms to promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being. It operates through the following laws of physics:
Vibration - instruments used create sounds with healing frequencies
Resonance - the vibration from the healing sounds is transmitted into our body and our cells start to resonate with the healing frequencies
Entrainment - the frequency of our body synchronises with the healing frequencies; helps the brain and body reach deep relaxation
Sound healing leverages the concept of resonance, where vibrations from sound waves interact with the body's natural frequencies.
The human body is made up of electronic vibrations, with each atom and elements of the body, each organ and organism, having its electronic unit of vibration necessary for the sustenance of, and equilibrium in that particular organism. The human body is composed of about 70% water, which makes it an excellent conductor for sound vibrations. These vibrations penetrate deeply, affecting tissues, organs, and energy systems.
Sound healing can guide the brain into desired states, such as deep relaxation or heightened focus, through brainwave entrainment.
Instruments like singing bowls, tuning forks, and gongs produce tones that align with alpha, theta, and delta brainwaves, which are associated with relaxation, meditation, and sleep.
Sound therapy is believed to help balance the body's energy centers or chakras by removing blockages or restoring harmony in energy flow.Specific tones and frequencies are associated with different chakras, enhancing alignment and well-being.
The calming sounds and vibrations stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps the body shift from "fight or flight" to "rest and digest" mode, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
Singing bowls (crystal or Tibetan): Produce harmonic vibrations to relax and balance.
Gongs: Create deep, resonating tones that promote cellular healing and stress release.
Tuning forks: Emit precise frequencies for specific healing purposes.
Drums and rattles: Grounding and energizing vibrations that connect to primal rhythms.
Chimes and bells: Light, uplifting sounds that enhance mindfulness and clarity.
Reduces stress and anxiety
Improves sleep quality
Enhances focus and mental clarity
Balances energy and emotions
Alleviates physical pain or discomfort
Promotes overall relaxation and inner peace
By working with the body's natural rhythms and vibrations, sound healing offers a holistic approach to well-being, harmonizing mind, body, and spirit. Sound therapy often facilitates deep relaxation and emotional release. If a person experiences a sudden emotional shift or catharsis, it can lead to physical symptoms like dizziness or light-headedness, sometimes perceived as vertigo.
We offer qualified facilitators, yet you are fully responsible for yourself. Please carefully read contraindications before booking a session to make an informed decision. If you are unsure please book free consultation to talk with the expert.
Pregnancy: We do not offer complementary therapies within the first trimester of pregnancy due to its unstable nature.
People healing from cancer should book free consultation first to ensure they are fit for treatment. The best way to start is to discuss it with your doctor. If you are undergoing chemotherapy we won’t be able to provide sound treatment at the same time. Every form of healing requires energy so please contact us when you completely finish the treatment, recover from its side effects and feel stronger within yourself.
Relatives or carers of those in the last phase of life should book free consultation to discuss suitable arrangements. Sound therapy eases the passing and significantly decreases the amount of stress.
Contraindications:
epilepsy, severe mental illness, wearing a pacemaker, recent hip/joint operation
ear and balance problems (Ménière's Disease), vertigo, tinnitus
Respecting contraindications in sound healing ensures a safe and effective experience for all participants. Ignoring them can lead to potential risks such as heightened anxiety, dizziness, or physical discomfort, undermining the therapeutic benefits and trust in the process.
Hearing aid must be removed during the session and it can give you feedback and disrupt the session.
You will still experience a full range of benefits from the session as auditory experience is just one of few levels on which we experience sound.
